Today is a travel day. We checked out of the hotel and left our bags to do some more shopping for a few hours. Then we hopped in a taxi to take us to the airport. We are flying to Surat Thani to meet up with Su and her family, and start the second leg of our Thailand vacation.
We met Su, Su’s mom, and her uncle Na Buu at Surat Thani. Lots of smiles all around, and my very limited Thai language skills now being put to the test. We got to our beach house (we rented it from a friend of Na Buu’s for our stay) and were greeted to a welcome party, hosted by many relatives and friends. Both of Su’s parents have eight siblings each, so I’m a bit overwhelmed at who is who, who is related, and who is not. There were only about 20 people there (only twenty) so I didn’t meet the whole family yet, but I did finally meet Su’s sisters Joy and Wan, which was great.
I drank some whisky with the men while Mom sat with the women (that’s how they roll, apparently) and we had some more great Thai food. I am glad that they knew we were very tired and didn’t keep us up until the wee hours of the morning, though I wish I had some more energy and better Thai speaking ability to connect with Su’s family, but it is what it is and I’m happy that I’m here and on my way to get to know Su’s family and culture better.
Since it was a travel day there was not much activity, but we still have a LOT of vacation to go…
